Sieve trays are a cost-effective type of mass transfer trays.
Here, the tray consists of a perforated plate. The liquid flows over the perforated plate while the vapor flows through the holes and through the liquid. The rising steam prevents the liquid from flowing directly through the holes. The load area of sieve trays is much lower than the load area of valve trays.
